Super Saiyan is a powerful transformation in the anime and manga of Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball GT, available to Saiyans. As stated in Dragon Ball Z, the transformation comes more naturally to Saiyans whose parent(s) where a Super Saiyan before they were born.

There is also five other forms of Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, Super Saiyan 4, and the movie-exclusive forms False Super Saiyan and Legendary Super Saiyan.

For the first transformation, there is also three sub-forms: Ascended Saiyan, Ultra Saiyan, and Full-Power Saiyan.

If the user turns into a Great Ape as a Super Saiyan, they will become a Golden Great Ape.

Original Super SaiyanEdit

In a story told by Vegeta, the transformation was a legend, and only one being had obtained it in a thousand years. The Saiyan was so strong, however, that his overwhelming power was his demise.

Frieza soon came to fear the legend of the Super Saiyan, and, not wanting anyone to grow stronger than him, killed almost all of the Saiyans by destroying their home planet.

OverviewEdit

As stated by Goku, the transformation results from a need, not a desire. The form is, at first, acheived by a burst of rage, although can be accessed later without trouble. In Broly's case, he was born the Legendary Super Saiyan, and was, by legend, destined to become a Super Saiyan.

Although Bardock didn't achieve the transformation in flashbacks of Dragon Ball Z, as well as the movie Bardock: The Father of Goku, he does in the anime and manga of Episode of Bardock. The canonicity of this, however, is debatable.

An interesting thing to note is that all known Super Saiyans are males. Female Saiyans appear in the non-cannon game Dragon Ball Hereos, though.
